Job Description
Position Overview
The Residential Coordinator of Residential Education cultivates a safe, inclusive, and engaging residential community, aligning with Sarah Lawrence College’s mission to support students as they navigate independence and young adulthood. Reporting to the Assistant Director of Residential Education, the position provides leadership in residential education, including supervising a team of Resident Advisors, implementing engaging programming, and supporting student development through direct mentorship and advocacy. The RC plays a key role in incident response, community engagement, and student support while helping to develop a robust residential education programming model committed to student leadership, engagement and success. 
 
Compensation
The salary for this position is $48,500 and is commensurate with experience. Additionally, a one-bedroom on campus apartment available year-round, including utilities is part of the compensation for this role along with a comprehensive benefits package, and opportunities for on-campus professional development with other student affairs departments. This is a one-year appointment, renewable for up to three years and based on satisfactory performance and institutional need.
This position is ideal for an entry level professional who is interested in the student affairs profession within the higher education environment. There is opportunity for development and on the ground practitioner training under the leadership and guidance of higher education student affairs practitioners committed to college student development AND the success, retention and growth of those aspiring to become Student Affairs leaders and practitioners. 
Live in staff will be required to sign a Housing Agreement outlining the expected terms of use and occupancy of Sarah Lawrence accommodations. 

Essential Duties Summary
Essential Functions
  • Supervise and mentor a team of Resident Advisors, providing guidance, conducting performance evaluations, and ensuring effective execution of residential programs.
  • Facilitate administrative tasks such as student engagement activities, health and safety inspections, wellness checks, budget management, and mediation of student concerns.
  • Collaborate with campus partners to support programming that addresses student needs and fosters community engagement, while upholding Sarah Lawrence’s Principles of Mutual Respect.
  • Serve as a primary hearing officer for student conduct cases, ensuring fairness and adherence to campus policies.
  • In coordination with other RC’s maintain consistent weekly office hours in the Student Life Suite to provide student support, facilitate wellness initiatives, and address community concerns.
  • Participate in the primary on-call rotation, managing crises and making informed decisions to safeguard student welfare, with a focus on cultural competence and sensitivity.
  • Work with members of the Residential Life team with the opening and closing of the residence halls, housing selection and placement process, conduct room inspections and assist with facilities reporting and follow-up.
  • Attend and participate in weekly and monthly meetings within Student Affairs including Residential Life staff meetings, Student Life and campus safety teams to discuss incident management, student trends, and community needs.
  • Partner with Student Life team to support and help coordinate campus-wide events and activities, such as new student and transfer orientations, Residence hall move in, welcome week events, and large scale campus wide programs and events.
  • Maintain effective communication and collaboration with Student Affairs departments, including Health Services, Title IX, and the Office of Spiritual Life.
  • Regularly engage in campus events and community activities to strengthen relationships with students and promote residential engagement.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor. 
 
Residential Education Responsibilities
  • In collaboration with the Residential Life team, coordinate recruitment, selection and training of Resident Advisors.
  • Develop monthly in-service training and development opportunities for Residential Life student staff.
  • Develop and implement monthly Residential Education programs focused on enhancing student engagement, wellbeing and sense of belonging using evidence based practice and assessment of student needs.
  • Manage the Residential Life social media accounts to maintain consistent communication and student engagement. 
  • Develop and manage residential life initiatives (such as surveys for residential life concerns, newsletter coordination, harm reduction education and the like).
  • Serve as the Residential Education / Housing subcommittee representative on the Committee on Student Life (COSL).
  • Work with Res Life RCs and other Student Life campus partners to coordinate in the development and implementation of a campus wide student leadership program aimed for the enhancement of the Sarah Lawrence student experience. 
  • Organize and maintain the Resource Room, ensuring availability of materials for residential programming.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor. 

Required Qualifications
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • A minimum of 1-3 years of experience in student affairs, residential life, or a related field including work done in an undergraduate position.
  • Proven ability to supervise and mentor student staff, with a commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to manage multiple responsibilities efficiently.
  • Experience in crisis management, with the capacity to make sound decisions under pressure.
  • Familiarity with community building and the ability to enforce policies that uphold safety and mutual respect.
  • Valid state driver’s license.

Physical and Cognitive Requirements
  • Moderately sedentary, involving periods of sitting and computer use.
  • Frequent verbal and written communication required. 
  • Capacity to organize and synthesize detailed information.
  • Occasional walking/standing/lifting/handling of materials required.

  • Interest in community building and promoting student well-being through proactive initiatives.
  • Proficiency with technology, including database management and communication platforms.
  • Ability to create and manage complex spreadsheets and handle budget responsibilities.
  • Comfort working in a live-in, residential setting, adapting to the demands of a dynamic student population.
